Andie MacDowell and Recycling Week. Where does it all go?
Every Monday night, as I sort the family rubbish into 7 (ok, 4) different bins for recycling collection, I – without fail – think about Andie MacDowell. Is it just me? Or are you all thinking about Andie MacDowell?
More specifically I’m thinking about the opening sequence to the 1989 classic "Sex, Lies, and Videotape" also starring James Spader and Peter Gallagher, directed by Steven Soderbergh. FYI - the film won the Palme d’Or in Cannes and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Writing. It’s a must-watch-again classic.
Andie’s character – Ann Bishop Mullany – is in with her therapist:
“Garbage. All I’ve been thinkin’ about all week is garbage… I’ve gotten real concerned over what’s gonna happen with all the garbage. We’ve got so much of it. You know, I mean, we have to run out of places to put this stuff eventually…”
And like Ann, as the pile of dog food tins and endless plastic food cartons and cardboard boxes gets sifted, I really do have a momentary existential episode wondering where the hell is all this stuff going?
Why do we have so much of it? Why do they keep making it? What’s the alternative? Do they really just take it over the hill and shove it in the landfill? I mean, am I wasting my time out here in the dark filling bins?
What I’d love more than anything this Recycling Week is for someone to take me to one side, answer these questions calmly and clearly, ease my mind, make me feel like it’s all going to be OK – and I swear, I’ll never think about Andie again on bin night. I promise.
